At least 12 people have been confirmed dead and scores still missing following a landslide that hit Bundibugyo district Tuesday morning.
Hundreds of people have been left homeless and property worth millions destroyed in the tragic accident following a prolonged heavy rain that started Monday night until 6am Tuesday.
According to the Bundibugyo district Red Cross manager Mr Tom Ndyanabo, bodies of 12 people have so far been retrieved from the mud and scores feared buried.
“We have so far retrieved 12 bodies. We are still carrying out rescue operations to ascertain the total number of the dead. The death toll may rise because other people are still missing. We suspect they are still buried in the mud,” Mr Ndyanabo said.

An entire family of six people was reportedly buried in their house at Kyamukube village in Bukonzo sub county Bughendera County. They were identified as Muhindo Moses, 25, his wife Biira Anet, 22, Masika Doreen, 10, Baluku Sovik, 15, Masika Linet, 1 and Biira Moureen, 5.
All the six bodies were by press time still lying at Kyamukube Health Centre waiting to be transferred to Bundibugyo Main Hospital for post-mortem.
In Buhundu village in Bukonzo Sub County, three people died while the other three were from Bumadu village in Bundibugyo town council.

The LC3- elect Bukonzo Sub County George Mutwalhughuma confirmed the tragic incident and said homes of hundred reds of people have been washed away by floods.
Mutwalhughuma further noted that there are many people who are homeless with properties and crops destroyed by the devastating floods that followed the heavy down pour.
Police and Red Cross in the district have rushed to the affected areas to rescue some of the survivors.
Bundibugyo is a hilly district with several valleys located in Rwenzori sub-region in Western Uganda.
Mutwalhughuma further noted that there are many people who are homeless with properties and crops destroyed by the devastating floods that followed the heavy down pour.
Police and Red Cross in the district have rushed to the affected areas to rescue some of the survivors.
